Oh, and he has a no-trade clause so he could handpick the team he wanted to go to and could even pull the plug on a deal that netted us too high a return (thus rendering his new team too weak in his opinion).

Ric Bucher must have forgotten that Kobe has a no-trade clause. He also seems to forget that if a club wants him, they would have to blow up their roster to get him. Kobe isn't going anywhere.

Kobe could always waive the NTC if he really wanted to get traded. But even then, his destination team would need to send back literally half their team match his salary. Or he could go to a doormat team with tons of cap space and young talent/picks to send back.

Why would he do either thing?

That bold bit is the most infuriating thing isn't it? I mean wow...

I know everyone says the old cliché that you can't beat father time, but you know what, Kobe Bryant is giving the old man a run for his money and this idiot thinks we should trade him.

Why would Jim Buss consider doing something he lacks the ability to do?

The only thing the Lakers can do without Kobe's consent is to exercise the amnesty clause on him. They'd still have to pay him the remainder of his contract (minus whatever token salary he made with his next game).

Kobe's cap number would come off the Lakers payroll as a result.....

And for all that, the Lakers would still not be under the cap. And there would be fanbase revolt to deal with on top of it.

Didn't Bryant once blow snot in his hand then rubbed it in Bucher's hair? If so then there's your motive.

I would actually consider it more likely that the Lakers use the amnesty clause on Kobe than trade him.

Or phrased in other words, trading Kobe is dang near impossible. Have to remember no team will give up so much for an aging superstar who doesn't have many years left at his current level. Further, what if the Lakers don't want to take back so much salary for Kobe given the new luxury taxes? Given those taxes and that the 2013-14 season is the first year they kick in, if the Lakers are in a breakup mode that summer, then I could see them letting Kobe go in order to rebuild around Bynum. Let me modify that by saying I think it's more likely they use the clause on MWP or Gasol. And I've thought it's possible the team never uses it; they'll find other ways to unload these players.

How about having one of the greats deservingly retiring as a Laker, having played his entire career here... oh and a lot of cap space to work with?
